BEAUTIFUL ITALY

The memory of sun kissed hills, fields of golden sunflowers, and of blue sea mist inspired a wave of immigrants to create a new life built on values as rich as the soil of their native Italy.

Although their immigration to the USA crested between 1890 and 1910, the impact of the Italians on American culture is extensive. Named for Amerigo Vespucci, this new land reflected the adventurous spirit of the Italian people.

With visions of the promises of a new life filled with possibilities, our forefathers and mothers set across the Atlantic. Not all came through Ellis Island; some entered through Baltimore while others through New Orleans and Canada. The hardships endured were a sharp contrasted to the visions of milk and honey...alas, the streets were not paved with gold.

America has been built on the backs of a never-ending flow of immigrant workers. Many had no choice but to live in unheated tenements. However, the close knit family groupings were sustained by a religious fervor.... God would provide. I am anxious to tell the stories of the daughters of these immigrant families, before they are lost. I believe that this first generation of Italian- American women possess a strength of character which has enabled them to achieve.

LA BELLA ITALIA

Il ricordo delle colline baciate dal sole, dei campi di girasole e la nebbia blu del mare, ha spinto un’ondata di immigranti a crearsi una nuova vita costruita su valori ricchi come il suolo della loro Italia.

Nonostante l’emigrazione verso gli Stati Uniti raggiunse l’apice tra il 1890 ed 1910, l’influenza degli italiani sulla cultura americana fu significativa. Chiamata in onore di Amerigo Vespucci, questa nuova terra rifletteva lo spirito avventuroso della gente italiana.

Con le promesse di una vita nuova, piena di possibilitá, i nostri antenati e le nostri madri si avventurarono ad attraversare l’Atlantico. Non tutti passarono da Ellis Island, certi entrarono da Baltimora, altri da New Orleans e dal Canada. Le difficoltá provate erano in forte contrasto con le visioni rose e fiori…purtroppo le strade non erano ricoperte d’oro.

L’America é stata costruita sulla schiena degli immigranti che arrivavano con flusso costante. Per molti, l’unica scelta era vivere in locali non riscaldati. Comunque i gruppi famigliari erano molto uniti e sostenuti da un forte fervore religioso…Dio provvederá.

Desidero raccontare le storie delle figlie di queste famiglie di immigranti prima che vadano perse. Penso che questa prima generazione di donne italo-americane possedessero una forza di carattere tale che permise loro di realizzarsi.
